Three foundational questions a brand needs to ask themselves
Part of building a brand is knowing the foundation of why you are starting your business. Similar what is it you do to help others. Whether your business has been going for five years or you are just now starting. It is important to re-evaluate your brand and make sure that is on the right path. The way to know is by asking yourself and your team whether your values are the same by what you say and what you do. This can be seen on your website, through your products, and how you are marketing. Three questions will help make sure you are staying consistent. They will help if you need to change how your brand is interacting with your audience. I am going to break these questions down for you.
These questions will help clarify who you are talking to and how you can help meet their needs. For a new business, these questions will prepare you when you reach out to a designer. To build your visual brand identity and marketing material. These are only a few questions that I ask my clients when I take them through my brand strategy process. Let’s jump right in!
Who is it that your business is helping?
Having a clear picture of your target audience gives clarity on all the material you will be sharing with them. As well as what you will be putting in front of them. But you first need to know who you are talking to. An ideal client or customer profile can give you that clarity. What gender group are you targeting? Is there an age range that your audience falls under? What is their economic standing? Where do they like to hang out? What is it they like to do? How would they speak about your products? These are just a few questions that are a great place to start when wanting to know who your customer is. Start with an individual in mind that would be buying your product or service. Brainstorm the in’s and out’s of this individual. If you don’t know then it might be helpful to go to social media platforms to ask them simple questions like the ones I mentioned.
To have a better understanding. You can create fun and simple polls, quizzes, or questionnaires. Make sure to get a clear understanding of who your audience is. This will help answer the next question.
2. What is it that your audience is struggling with?
Now that you know who it is you are talking to you need to know what are they struggling with. Because it will get you closer to helping them with what you offer as I will mention soon. What are some of the pain points that your audience is going through? What are the feelings that they are having because of it? Knowing what they are struggling with allows you to start to develop a dialog into which you can speak. Using the language based on those emotions and struggles helps you meet them where they are at. This will help the way you speak about your brand to those that are listening. As well as those that will come to find you.
3. What solution do you provide to help them?
Knowing who you are talking to and what they are struggling with you can be better equipped for how to help them. This allows you to see if you can offer them something that will transform the way they have been doing things. You will be providing the opposite of the emotion that they had during their struggles. This may even help change or modify what you offer to meet their needs. Which is very important to do than what we want to offer. What we want is not always what the audience needs. Leaning into what people are saying is what makes the difference. It will shape future projects or products and have people ready to engage with your brand.
Building your story brand is important to keep your business moving in the direction you want it to go. The book Building A Story Brand by Donald Miller is an amazing resource to get all the messaging for your brand to be clear. I read through this book and wrote out what it prompted me to do for me to get clear on how to talk to my audience.
Which of these three questions do you need to work on more? I Would love to know!
