Project Story:

Do you recall the memories and picture books of your childhood? The stories that stood out, even when words were not always a part of them? There is something quite simple and fundamental about just color, shape, and pictures—yet they stayed with us years later. With this project, I wanted to explore those fundamentals while still making an impression with what is being seen.

In this threefold collection of posters, I wanted to bring awareness to a few environmental issues that can be changed by the actions we take as a society. The collection tells a story through three topics, all unified by color and the treatment of images, presented in a strong visual contrast of black and white. You may notice that there is no text on the posters—this was intentional. With the collage style of the posters, I felt the story spoke louder through imagery alone, making text unnecessary.

I focused on the issues of plastic consumption and its impact on ecosystems and endangered species. The other two topics I wanted to highlight through these visual collages are soil depletion/stripping and overfishing. In each poster, human hands are incorporated into the design to emphasize that with our hands, we have the power to either restore or destroy the very planet we call home.

This project was an experimental process for me, as it was outside of my usual design approach. Returning to the foundations of graphic design, I simplified the layouts to focus on shape, color, texture, and imagery. Inspired by contemporary designers demonstrating the power of collage, I decided to try my hand at it as well. The result is three visual designs that convey major environmental issues harming our planet.

Expression and form were central to my creative process, and I hope these final designs resonate with viewers, telling a story that encourages them to listen and take action. My ultimate hope is that this work inspires others to fight for our planet.
